Our Story

In 2010 a group came together interested in cutting edge sports technology to assist our New Zealand canoe and kayak athletes in their build up to the 2012 London Olympics. Our brief was to produce an affordable device to give athletes real time cadence feedback while they paddle.

New Zealand head coach Gordon Walker identified real time cadence feedback as a key to maximising top speed by improving distance per stroke. Gordon worked with Lisa Carrington using the prototype Vaaka sensors helping her on her journey to Olympic Gold. Vaaka paddle cadence sensors are now being used by Kayakers, Olympic Canoeists, Pacific Outrigger athletes, Stand up Paddle Boarders, Ocean ski paddlers and Multisport athletes all over the world. Using cadence to structure on water sessions  to reach peak potential is now within reach of every paddle sport athlete.

The Vaaka team is lead by Edwin Nieman and Brendan O’Neill who share a joint passion for science and sport. Vaaka Limited is dedicated to making your time on the water more productive.
